BBC Sessions
February 2000 saw the release of the BBC Sessions.
A lot of the material included was known to many fans on a bootleg CD called Maximum
BBC, which was available on different labels and contained 26-28 tracks.
My copy is on Red Robin Records ROB-1041 and has 27 cuts, missing Heaven and
Hell.
Unfortunately, to get the maximum amount of material necessitates buying a
couple of releases. If you purchased the CD in the U.S. at Best Buy it came with
a bonus CD containing 8 tracks. However, the Best Buy (as well as all U.S.
copies) are missing Man With Money and the Shakin' All Over track
has the Spoonful section edited out. The European copies are complete but do not
come with a bonus disc.
It appears that the release used a tape hiss reduction method called NoNoise.
The tape hiss present on the bootleg has been greatly reduced, but the result
has been a very strident sound with booming bass that I find quite unpleasant to
listen to.
The following chart lays out the differences between the legitimate release
and the bootleg. The left column is the legitimate release and the right column
is the Red Robin Maximum BBC bootleg. The track number is listed first -
a "B" indicates the Best Buy bonus disc. I've used the recording dates
listed in the The
Who Concert File by Joe McMichael and 'Irish' Jack Lyons. Times as given on each
release are shown along with any differences.
